Sandwiches are having their moment - again!
The humble sandwich is very much on trend in 2025, despite having an impressive 200+ year history. 
 
In fact, the idea of using bread to hold or wrap food is no new idea, with original recipes dating back to the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians. However, the modern sandwich (as we know it today) is said to have been invented in 1762 by John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. The story goes that while the Earl was playing a game of cards, he grew hungry, needing a quick and convenient snack that did not require him to leave the game or get greasy hands. A rather ingenious butler came to his rescue, presenting him with the solution: roast beef between two pieces of bread. 

Sandwich Culture

A lunchtime staple, a snack or a meal, the sandwich comes in many different forms around the world, constantly being reinvented. From France's Croque Monsieur to Vietnam's Bánh mì, the humble sandwich knows many forms and flavours, all of which can be delicious!
 
In the UK, we LOVE a sandwich. Whether it be because of habit, comfort or for convenience, 56% of Brits consume a sandwich every day. With the bacon butty and the BLT rivalling one another for the title of the nation's favourite sandwich. 
 
Having a sandwich preference is somewhat part of the British identity.
Whether you're a tuna and sweetcorn, egg and cress or ham and cheese person, most of us have a 'go-to' when it comes to sandwiches.
 
However, sandwiches, as with many things, seem to be getting an upgrade!
Bigger, better, and more decadent! With trending establishments such as @sandwichsandwichuk (established near us in Bristol) and @birleys_ldn (London) making supersized and picture-perfect sarnies.
